Most People Assume The Cost Of Being Reachable Is The Interruption. It Is Not.
The expensive part is the state your brain holds while it waits for one — a low-grade task running underneath everything else you do, and still running on the nights nobody contacts you at all. For anyone who has spent an evening technically off, technically free, and arrived at the next morning with nothing restored.
The Expense Is Not The Interruption
The clearest evidence in this literature is not about interruption. It is about waiting.
On-call research isolates something ordinary working life keeps hidden: what availability costs when nothing actually happens. In a within-person study of 132 employees across 13 organizations, researchers compared four days on which people were required to be available outside working hours against four days on which they were not. The availability days produced measurably worse start-of-day mood and a different cortisol awakening response, and the effect ran through restricted recovery — those nonwork hours simply did not function as leisure, because control over how to spend them had been removed.[1]
Sit with the structure of that finding. It is not "interruptions are costly." Everyone already knows interruptions are costly. It is that the requirement to remain reachable degrades recovery whether or not anyone reaches you. The mechanism is not contact. It is constrained control over your own attention during hours that are nominally yours.
This is not a single study standing alone. A meta-analysis synthesizing the work-related extended availability literature reaches the same conclusion across samples: availability demands are consistently associated with poorer recuperation, reduced psychological detachment, and worse well-being outcomes.[2] The signal is stable enough to plan around.

Which means being reachable is not a passive state. It is an open task your brain is holding for you, without asking, at a cost you never see itemized.
What Damages You Is The Urge To Respond
Researchers use the term telepressure for a specific internal state: the preoccupation with, and urge to quickly respond to, work-related messages. It is not the same as having a lot of messages. It is what happens inside you when one arrives.
Across two samples — 254 and 409 employees — telepressure was negatively related to satisfaction with work-life balance, and the mechanisms carrying that relationship were recovery experiences: psychological detachment, control over leisure time, relaxation, and mastery.[3] Related work found telepressure associated with reduced detachment and, through it, with physical exhaustion and disrupted sleep.[4]
Read the structure again, because it changes the intervention. The harm does not live in the inbox. It lives in the internal state that keeps the inbox live. Two people can receive the same forty messages on the same day; the one who feels the pull to answer within minutes pays substantially more for those forty messages than the one who does not.
This is why volume-based fixes underdeliver. Filters, unsubscribes, folder rules, notification settings — all of them reduce input without touching the state that makes input expensive. You can cut your message count in half and feel exactly as depleted, because the thing you were paying for was never the count.
The Cost Is In The Unfinished Attention
Attention does not move cleanly between tasks. It leaves residue. When you break off one task to handle another, a portion of your attention stays behind on the first. Leroy and Schmidt demonstrated across three studies that this residue reduces cognitive availability for the interrupting task and measurably degrades performance on it — and that how well people switch depends on how the interrupted task was framed and whether it felt resolvable.[5] Residue is worst when the first task was left open.
Now stack that against continuous reachability. Every check leaves residue on the work. Every return to the work leaves residue on the check. Neither is genuinely finished. A day assembled this way can contain a hundred switches that never appear on any calendar, and the person living it will report, accurately, that they worked all day and cannot say on what.
The arithmetic people run — "it was only two minutes" — is measuring the wrong thing. The two minutes is the visible part. The cost is the unfinished attention left on both sides of it.
- The requirement, not the contact. Availability demands degraded start-of-day mood and altered cortisol on days with no calls at all.[1]
- The urge, not the volume. Telepressure predicts strain through impaired detachment — a separate variable from how many messages arrive.[3][4]
- The residue, not the minute. The cost of a two-minute check is the attention left unfinished on both sides of it.[5]
- Not established. The popular claim that a phone merely present on the desk drains cognitive capacity. See below.
The "Brain Drain" Finding Is Contested
We are leaving it out on purpose. You have seen the 2017 result cited everywhere: that the mere presence of your own phone — face down, powered off — reduces available working-memory capacity. It is a vivid claim, and it may yet hold in some narrower form.
But a pre-registered direct replication of the key experiment, using the same tasks and the same six conditions, found no difference in performance across phone-location conditions on either the operation-span or the go/no-go task. A separate study testing phone presence against short-term and prospective memory found no overall effect either.[6] Other work has reported supporting results. The literature is genuinely split, and the honest summary is that we do not yet know.
We are flagging this because the argument does not need it. The evidence on availability demands, telepressure, and attention residue is stronger, more direct, and more actionable. A case built on a contested finding is a case that collapses the first time someone checks the citation.
The Evening That Did Not Count
Consider the pattern rather than the person: a week where nothing went wrong. No crisis, no late calls, no emergencies. Just seven evenings during which the phone stayed within reach and the possibility of being needed stayed open.
On paper, the recovery time was there. In practice, the mornings got progressively flatter, the first hour of work kept starting later, and the explanation offered was that it had been a busy week — when in fact the workload had been ordinary. What had not been ordinary was the number of hours spent available. The bill arrived at the start of the day, which is exactly where the research says to look for it.
You Do Not Reduce Availability By Intending To
You reduce it by defining it. Everything above points the same direction: the variable you control is not how many messages arrive, and it is not your willpower in the moment one does. It is whether the question "am I on right now?" has a settled answer.
Not a private preference — a stated response-time expectation the people around you can see. Ambiguity about when you will answer is precisely what keeps the background task running. A known window switches it off.
Residue is worst on unfinished work. A two-line reply that says "I have this, answering Thursday" ends an open loop far more completely than reading the message and leaving it sitting there.
Detachment is the mediating variable in nearly every study cited here. Hold one genuinely unreachable block per day as a standard — then check whether you actually held it, rather than whether you meant to.
Start-of-day state is where the availability cost surfaces in the data. If your mornings are consistently flat, the previous evening was working, whether or not the phone ever rang.
Being reachable feels like responsiveness. Held with no edges, it is a standing withdrawal against the exact capacity the work requires — and the withdrawal clears whether or not anyone calls.
