You Are Not Doing Two Things At Once. You Are Doing One Thing, Then Another, Then Paying A Tax To Switch Back.
And the tax is the part that never makes it into how efficient the whole process felt. For anyone who runs three tabs, two conversations, and a half-written email at the same time and genuinely believes it's the fastest way through the day.
WHAT FEELS LIKE PARALLEL PROCESSING IS RAPID SWITCHING — AND SWITCHING IS NEVER FREE.
The sensation of multitasking is a sensation of doing several things simultaneously. The mechanism is almost never that.
For nearly all cognitively demanding tasks, the brain is not running two processes in parallel — it is rapidly alternating attention between them, and each alternation carries a measurable cost: time spent reactivating the task you're switching to and suppressing the one you just left. This cost persists even in people who multitask constantly and have had years of practice doing it — it does not train away with repetition, which rules out the common assumption that heavy multitaskers have simply gotten better at doing several things at once.1 They haven't gotten better at parallel processing. They've just gotten more used to paying a tax they never notice.

BUSY AND PRODUCTIVE REGISTER AS THE SAME FEELING. THEY AREN'T MEASURING THE SAME THING.
The felt sense of multitasking is usually one of momentum — lots of things are moving, attention is engaged, the day feels full. That feeling is a read on activity level, not on output per unit of time.
The two diverge sharply once switching costs are added up across a day. Every switch also carries an effort cost the brain registers as intrinsically aversive, which means frequent task-switching isn't just slower on paper — it's also more subjectively taxing than the same amount of focused work would have been, even though it often feels more energizing in the moment because of the variety and stimulation involved.2 The mismatch between how efficient something feels and how efficient it actually is doesn't announce itself. It just quietly shows up in the length of the day and the shortness of what actually got finished.
Every switch back to a task requires reloading its context into working memory — the exact information you had readily available thirty seconds before the interruption.
Attention doesn't cleanly disengage from the task you just left; a portion stays active, competing for resources with the task you've switched to.
The switch itself is registered as more costly than sustained focus on one thing, regardless of how stimulating or engaging the variety feels.2
None of this requires dramatic multitasking to show up. Checking a notification mid-paragraph produces the same mechanism at a smaller scale, repeated dozens of times a day.
The compounding version of this is worth naming, because it's the part that actually shows up at the end of a long day. A single switch costs a small, almost unnoticeable amount of time and effort. Dozens of switches, spread across eight or ten hours, add up to a substantial and largely invisible tax — invisible because no single instance of it felt significant enough to register, and because the felt experience of "staying on top of everything" by checking in on multiple things frequently is a genuinely different sensation from the accumulated cost of doing so.
The day ends with the sense of having been extremely busy and engaged, and a noticeably shorter list of things actually finished than the busyness would predict. That gap is usually the switching tax, collected in small, unfelt increments all day.
THE OBJECTIONS ARE USUALLY A DEFENSE OF THE FEELING, NOT THE EVIDENCE.
Each of these defends a real experience — engagement, stimulation, boredom-avoidance. None of them are evidence of higher output.
"I'm just built differently — I actually focus better with multiple things going."
Subjective stimulation and objective output are different measurements, and the research on switching costs doesn't find a subgroup exempt from the mechanism. What's more likely is that the variety keeps energy and engagement higher, which is a real and valuable thing — just not the same claim as "I get more done this way."
"Some of what I do is simple enough that switching costs shouldn't matter."
True — the switching tax scales with how much each task demands from working memory and attention, so alternating between two genuinely low-effort tasks costs less than alternating between two demanding ones. The trouble is most people apply the "this is easy enough to multitask" reasoning to tasks that are considerably more cognitively loaded than they're giving them credit for.

That's a real and legitimate benefit, and it's not the same claim as "switching makes me more productive." Variety can genuinely help sustain attention and motivation across a long stretch of work. The honest version of this trade-off is choosing switching deliberately for engagement when engagement is the bottleneck, rather than assuming it's free simply because it feels energizing.
One thing, then the next. The tax gets paid whether you notice it or not.
